Don't Get Bamboo-zled! Our Cutting Boards Are Food Safe and Fair Trade

Why choose a Personalized Living Personal VT Made Artisan Serving or CuttingBoard over bamboo?

Small Carbon Footprint

Our woods are state-side grown and responsibly forested; they are not shipped from overseas thus reducing the overall carbon footprint. Most bamboo comes from Asia and to get the bamboo to the US it must be shipped, which is costly and guzzles up energy. Some US bamboo sellers include “carbon offsets” in the price of their products; however, this only raises the price and doesn’t stop the depletion of limited natural resources like oil. It also doesn’t solve the questionable labor practices found in countries like China, the main supplier of bamboo.

Responsible

Does your bamboo supplier support sustainability? Many bamboo forests are being slashed and sold without a sustainable program in place thus destroying not only the plant but all who depend on the bamboo for food and shelter. Ancient forests also are being cleared to make room for the more profitable bamboo. While bamboo is good at preventing soil erosion, the initial deforestation and time it takes for the bamboo to establish itself leaves the land vulnerable. Additionally, while bamboo makes a good habitat for a large number of insects, birds and animals, there are other species that only call tree forests home; replacing much of the tree forests with bamboo decreases biodiversity in the region.

Our raw woods are sourced state-side from forest managers who support sustainable species cut responsibly. Which means they harvest using sustainable practices with a re-planting program in place and protection of wildlife.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Nothing goes to waste!

All of our scrap goes to heating our board production facilities and some employees homes. Our sawdust is certified organic and used by two Vermont Organic Dairy Farms.

Formaldehyde free

Our artisan boards are Urea Formaldehyde Free!

Is your bamboo certified? Urea, is a type of formaldehyde used to finish many types of bamboo. Formaldehyde is a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), which reduces indoor air quality. There are other options for getting the bamboo the

color you desire, including heating it, but heating bamboo wood decreases its strength, oftentimes making it less durable than regular wood.

Something tells me; that you like I, have no desire to serve, cut or prepare food on a product that was made with a known human carcinogen.

On the other hand, bamboo has become so profitable that the lower income, rural residents who originally benefited from farming it are succumbing to market pressures. To keep up with demand, farmers are increasingly using fertilizers and pesticides, which leach into the ground and contaminate groundwater.
